Jay Repsel: Looking Back on Year 1 (3/31/10)

The week of a show is always the worst. It's nearly impossible to focus on any task at hand when all I can think of is 6:55 p.m. on Saturday night when I'll hear "Back in Black" roaring over the P.A. and then Doc says those magic words, "Hello LaSalle!"

It's a problem I've been having around the first week of the month for an entire year now. I'm not sure I should call it a "problem", more like a "blessing". With only a couple of days to go until ANNIVERSARY, I wanted to share a few thoughts with you about the first year of DREAMWAVE.

I've spent the better part of my adult life in the wrestling business in one way or another. For the last nine years, on and off, I've been promoting pro wrestling shows. I can honestly say without hesitation that the last year has been by far the best year of my life both personally and professionally.

When DREAMWAVE was first being discussed, there were a lot of people who said that there was "no way it could work" and that "LaSalle is a dead town for wrestling". I think it's safe to say, one year later, that we proved them wrong. Please don't mistake my pride for arrogance though. I, personally, didn't do anything except bring a bunch of wonderful people to the same place at the same time. That is probably the greatest thing about DREAMWAVE, is that it is a huge group effort where all the pieces "just fit right". There is a TON of work that goes on behind the scenes. The finished product you see on show day is merely the sum of everybody's hard work... the reward. That being said, I'm the luckiest man alive to have the fans, locker room, and crew that I have. I couldn't have written this story any better if I tried.

Reflecting on the last year makes my head spin. It's had it's ups and downs but we persevered, adapted, and overcame it all. One month of sheer anxiety comes to mind for me....July. On July 18th, 2009 we ran a show head to head with an Alan Jackson concert that was two miles away from our show. Alan Jackson, who has 15 platinum records, a Grammy, and multiple American Music Awards, couldn't even drop our crowd below 450 people. If that weren't enough, we turned around and had two more shows in the next two weeks....both of which were huge successes.

Looking back on year one, I'm extremely proud that for $12.00 a kid can see a form of entertainment that their parents don't have to be ashamed of. I'm extremely proud that at a time when our industry is under constant scrutiny for all the wrong reasons, we can give back to the wrestling business by showcasing the sport in it's purest, most innocent form..the way it was meant to be.

I am humbled by what we have accomplished in the past year and I'm not sure anyone will ever understand how much it all means to me.

If I haven't said it yet, just for the record...I love this town.

Most dreams only last for one night, ours has been going on for an entire year now. The dream continues Saturday night at ANNIVERSARY.

Thank you for making it all possible.

Love Always,
